About
The artist

I am Raquel Munera, a Colombian artist and educator currently residing in Chicago.
Many of the cultural influences evident in my work I have received as an American citizen and by the Spanish nationality granted to those who have Sephardic ancestors. I have held individual and group exhibitions since 1982.

My most recent artistic work is based on the transformation of the materials we find and manipulate daily. The philosophy that guides me is that art must be exercised with the same seriousness as a child plays. My artistic references are numerous, but I highlight Chaín Soutine, Robert Ryman, and Jean Dubuffet.

I have always been fascinated to discover what is found between the layers that make up the things that reach our hands daily and the traces left on various surfaces . I decontextualize packaging and images of magazines and newspapers to communicate something different from their initial purpose.

which consists of achieving random shapes on different surfaces through writing incisions or spontaneous scratches in order to explore the plastic and aesthetic possibilities that these suggest.
The two-dimensional work I present has the fish as an image repeated in each work; this is due more to a work discipline than to a choice made according to symbolic or psychological associations.

In the series “Like a fish in water,” I pay tribute to the handwritten letter, which is a brand, an exclusive sign that identifies and makes visible what is felt and what is thought. Although text messages via chat or email are very convenient, they do not compare to something written by hand, because it involves slower and more reflective times. The envelopes that accompany the exhibition provide participants with the opportunity to share personal notes with others as traces of themselves
